7 Stunning Variations with Pictures https://imanimal.com/2024/05/09/7-stunning-variations-with-pictures/ https://imanimal.com/2024/05/09/7-stunning-variations-with-pictures/#respond Thu, 09 May 2024 07:24:38 +0000 http://imanimal.com/2024/05/09/7-stunning-variations-with-pictures/

The Bichon Frise, with its cheerful demeanor and characteristic fluffy coat, is a breed renowned not just for its amiable personality but also for its distinctive color variations. While many recognize the Bichon for its predominantly white fur, the breed does exhibit a range of subtle color variations that enhance its charming appearance. These variations, while often understated, can influence the aesthetic appeal of individual dogs and are subject to specific breed standards in competitive shows. This article explores seven stunning color variations of the Bichon Frise, each of which contributes to the breed’s unique visual allure and personality expression.

1. Pure White

The most common and iconic color for the Bichon Frise is pure white. This pristine coloration perfectly complements the breed’s merry and bright personality, making the dogs look like animated cotton balls. A pure white Bichon is highly sought after, especially in show circles where this color enhances the breed’s distinct appearance. The white fur also makes the Bichon’s dark eyes and lips stand out, contributing to their expressive and alert facial features. Owners and groomers must maintain the coat meticulously, as the pure white fur can easily show dirt and staining, which requires regular grooming and bathing to remain spotless and fluffy.

2. White and Cream

White and cream Bichons are slightly less common than their pure white counterparts but are equally adorable. These dogs have a predominantly white base with shadings of cream, particularly around the ears, back, and sometimes on the body. The cream patches are soft and subtle, often becoming more pronounced and darker as the dog ages. This variation adds a warm tone to the Bichon’s appearance, making each one uniquely patterned. The cream color does not affect the texture of their coat, which remains puffy and soft, requiring regular grooming to prevent mats and tangles.

3. White and Apricot

Bichons with white and apricot coloring feature lovely shades of light orange or apricot, usually found on the ears, cheeks, and sometimes the body. Like the cream markings, apricots can deepen with age and under certain lighting conditions. This color variation is highly prized for its rarity and beauty, often catching the eye of judges at dog shows. The contrast between the white and apricot fur highlights the playful and affectionate nature of these dogs, while also demanding the same level of care and grooming as other Bichons to maintain their fluffy appearance.

4. White and Buff

The white and buff Bichon Frises are marked by their light tan or buff-colored shadings, which can appear alongside the white areas of the coat. This coloring is subtle and can range from sandy to a light golden hue. Buff markings typically manifest around the ears, paws, and sometimes across the back of the dog. This understated color variation is perfect for families or individuals who appreciate a Bichon with a slightly different look while retaining the breed’s characteristic fluffy coat and cheerful demeanor.

5. White and Gray

White and gray Bichons are a rare color variation where the gray color may appear as light silvery streaks or patches. This color is usually found on the ears and tail, providing a graceful and distinguished appearance. Maintaining the clarity of the gray against the white fur requires regular grooming, as both colors can fade or yellow without proper care. The gray shading can give the Bichon an almost wise and noble look, adding an extra layer of charm to their already delightful personality.

6. White and Sable

The white and sable variation in Bichon Frises includes patches of dark brown or black, often intermingled with lighter colors, creating a beautiful sable pattern. This color is usually seen around the face and ears, giving the Bichon a strikingly handsome look. The sable markings are dynamic, meaning they can change and evolve as the dog grows and matures, often becoming more pronounced or shifting in pattern. This dynamic aspect makes each white and sable Bichon unique, with a one-of-a-kind pattern that is as individual as their personality.

7. Piebald

Piebald Bichons are those that exhibit large, irregular patches of color, primarily white, mixed with any of the other mentioned colors like cream, apricot, or gray. This variation is quite uncommon and not typically favored by show standards, but it offers a distinctive look for pet owners seeking a unique Bichon. Piebald patterns can make each dog highly individual, reflecting a fun and quirky personality that is inherent to the Bichon Frise breed.

In conclusion, while the Bichon Frise is often celebrated for its dazzling white coat, the breed’s color variations each bring their own special flair to this delightful breed. From the elegance of pure white to the unique beauty of piebald, these colors contribute to the breed’s popularity not just as show dogs but as beloved companions. The care and maintenance of their coat, regardless of color, remain a crucial aspect of owning a Bichon, ensuring that they are not only beautiful but also healthy and happy.

1. What is the most common color for a Bichon Frise?

The most common color for a Bichon Frise is pure white. This iconic and striking color perfectly complements the cheerful personality of the breed and highlights its fluffy, voluminous coat. Pure white Bichons are particularly favored in show circles, where the bright white enhances their distinct appearance and helps to emphasize their expressive dark eyes and vibrant personalities. Keeping the coat pristine and white requires regular grooming and careful maintenance to avoid staining and yellowing, which can be common with this color.

2. Are Bichon Frises ever completely black or brown?

No, Bichon Frises are never completely black or brown. According to the breed standard set by major kennel clubs, the Bichon Frise should be predominantly white. While some Bichons may display shades of cream, apricot, or buff in their coat, these should only appear as shadings and are usually found around the ears, body, or base of the tail. A completely black or brown coat would be highly unusual and not within the standard for the breed.

3. Can Bichon Frise puppies change color as they mature?

Yes, Bichon Frise puppies can change color as they mature. Puppies born with light cream, apricot, or buff shadings may see these colors either deepen or fade as they grow. The intensity of these colors can also change due to factors like sun exposure, diet, or grooming practices. It’s not uncommon for a Bichon Frise puppy to appear more colored when young, with the coat fading to a lighter shade or becoming more uniformly white as the dog reaches adulthood.

4. What causes the cream or apricot shadings in some Bichons?

The cream or apricot shadings in some Bichon Frises are caused by genetic factors that affect the pigmentation of the coat. These colors are variations of the gene for the white coat and are perfectly normal, although they are less desired in the show ring than a pure white coat. These shadings usually appear in areas such as the ears, back, and sometimes the flanks, giving the Bichon a soft, warm hue that contrasts with the pure white areas of their fur.

5. Is it common for Bichon Frises to have markings?

Yes, it is quite common for Bichon Frises to have subtle markings of cream, apricot, or buff, especially as puppies. These markings often become less noticeable as the dog matures, with the coat frequently turning completely white or retaining only faint hints of these colors. Markings are more accepted in pet Bichons than in show dogs, where a completely white coat is often preferred for competitive purposes.

6. How can I maintain the white color of my Bichon Frise’s coat?

Maintaining the white color of a Bichon Frise’s coat requires regular grooming and careful attention to cleanliness. Bathing your Bichon every 4 to 6 weeks with a high-quality dog shampoo can help prevent yellowing and staining. Daily brushing is also essential to remove dirt and prevent matting, which can discolor the coat. Additionally, using tear stain removers can help manage discoloration around the eyes, and protective wipes or sprays can be used on the paws and muzzle to combat staining from food or grass.

7. What is the rarest color found in Bichon Frises?

The rarest color variations in Bichon Frises would be those with pronounced apricot, buff, or gray markings that persist into adulthood. These colors are rare because they tend to fade as the puppy grows older, typically leaving a predominantly white coat. Persistent and distinct color markings in adult Bichon Frises are unusual and not typically seen in the breed standard for show dogs.

8. Are Bichon Frises with color markings less healthy?

No, Bichon Frises with color markings are not less healthy than those without markings. The presence of color markings is purely a cosmetic attribute and has no known correlation with the health of the dog. All Bichon Frises, regardless of coat color, are prone to the same health issues typical of the breed, such as allergies, dental problems, and joint issues.

9. Do Bichon Frises ever have a piebald pattern?

A piebald pattern, characterized by large irregular patches of color, is extremely rare and not standard in Bichon Frises. While some Bichon mixes might display this type of coloring due to genetics from other breeds, purebred Bichon Frises do not typically exhibit piebald patterns. The breed standard calls for a coat that is predominantly white, possibly with shadings of cream or apricot but not in distinct patches or spots.

10. Can environmental factors affect the color of a Bichon Frise’s coat?

Yes, environmental factors can affect the color of a Bichon Frise’s coat. Sun exposure can cause the coat to lighten, and certain elements in the soil or grass can stain or tint the fur, especially in lighter-colored areas. Diet and health also play a role in coat condition and color; for instance, nutritional deficiencies can dull the coat, while certain foods or supplements might enhance coat health and vibrancy. Regular grooming and proper care are essential to manage these environmental effects and maintain the coat’s color and texture.

Dog Was Trapped In Barn For 6-Years, Then Given An Astounding Makeover And A Brand New Life https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-was-trapped-in-barn-for-6-years-then-given-an-astounding-makeover-and-a-brand-new-life/ https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-was-trapped-in-barn-for-6-years-then-given-an-astounding-makeover-and-a-brand-new-life/#respond Sun, 24 Mar 2024 03:01:55 +0000 http://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-was-trapped-in-barn-for-6-years-then-given-an-astounding-makeover-and-a-brand-new-life/

When a call came in requesting assistance for a dog owned by a terminally ill person, a devoted team of animal rescue volunteers promptly took action, highlighting their deep commitment to the welfare of animals. But upon arriving at the designated location, the team encountered an unforeseen obstacle. They found a dog named Lasarus confined within a barn stall, where he had been living in isolation for an astonishing six years.

The team was immediately faced with daunting challenges as they attempted to reach Lasarus . The entrance to the stall was virtually barricaded by an accumulation of dirt and debris, evidence of the long period of neglect Lasarus had endured. The situation underscored not only the dire conditions in which Lasarus had been kept but also the resilience of the rescue team in their mission to provide care and a better life for animals in distress.

When they arrived at the stall, the two women were horrified to see just how bad the dog’s condition was. Lasarus’ coat was so filthy that it was hard for him to move. Lazarus was taken to a groomer immediately for a bath and haircut. At first, the dog refused to let the handlers cut his hair. He quickly realized how nice it would feel when he did.

Lasarus had about 33 pounds of fur removed, and he appeared as if he were a brand-new pet. Unfortunately, the dog was having trouble retaining the fact that he was liberated. The groomer who saved Lasarus, said that he was extremely suspicious of everyone.

After a while, the man was approached by another dog. He was given goodies and he quickly warmed up to everyone. It was obvious that he wasn’t used to human contact. It’s possible it had been years since he’d felt a gentle, caring touch.

Lasarus was at a rescue shelter for a few weeks before being adopted. He couldn’t walk initially, but with the proper therapy and training, he was able to take his first steps. It didn’t take long for this pup to find a good home. His new family celebrated his eighth birthday by showering him with all of the love he deserved. You’d never guess that he used to weigh 35 pounds of filth him now that he has a lovely coat of hair and a wonderful family to look after him!

Quiet Rescue Dog Started Barking At Wall One Day, Owner ‘Grabbed’ Him And Runs https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/quiet-rescue-dog-started-barking-at-wall-one-day-owner-grabbed-him-and-runs-3/ https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/quiet-rescue-dog-started-barking-at-wall-one-day-owner-grabbed-him-and-runs-3/#respond Sun, 24 Mar 2024 02:00:10 +0000 http://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/quiet-rescue-dog-started-barking-at-wall-one-day-owner-grabbed-him-and-runs-3/

A San Diego animal shelter received a call from Drew Smith, a 41-year-old engineer, several months ago. However, after failing to locate a dog he desired, he reluctantly took on Carl, a sickly 4-year-old Spaniel mix. He had no clue that the pup he was rescuing would ultimately save his life by possibly saving his home!

When Drew arrived home from work, he found Carl in the backyard with a furious and persistent bark. Even though he was otherwise a rather quiet dog, Drew was awakened from his slumber one night by the insistent and excruciating howls of Carl, who was usually a very “silent” companion.

At first, he tuned out the barks because they sounded odd, but then he recalled that Carl had been acting strangely all day. He quickly flipped on the lights in an alarming state to discover smoke billowing from the walls.

Drew managed to grab Carl in his arms and flee his apartment just before the flames began erupting from all sides thanks to the bark alarm. Drew made another amazing discovery! A fire had been smoldering “in the walls” for days, it appeared.

The whole week, Carl was suffering from headaches and a sore throat, but he never connected them to inhaling suppressed smoke.

Drew revealed that he did not want to adopt Carl due to the prospect of medical expenses associated with his dental problems. But after witnessing Carl’s brave act, Drew now believes that nothing is more precious than a dog’s devotion and loyalty. He knows he’s in good company since he has a wonderful relationship with his rescue companion!

Be sure to watch this video until the very end! It’s truly heartwarming and gripping!

Dog Comes Back Frantic And Soaking Wet And Begs Family To Follow Her To Nearby Dam https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-comes-back-frantic-and-soaking-wet-and-begs-family-to-follow-her-to-nearby-dam/ https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-comes-back-frantic-and-soaking-wet-and-begs-family-to-follow-her-to-nearby-dam/#respond Sun, 24 Mar 2024 00:42:25 +0000 https://imanimal.com/2024/03/24/dog-comes-back-frantic-and-soaking-wet-and-begs-family-to-follow-her-to-nearby-dam/

In Brisbane, Australia, David and his family were having a fun afternoon with some pals in an open area. Alexander, their 2-year-old son, was supposed to be playing with Leala, the family’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

But no one took notice when the youngster vanished from sight. The 9-year-old dog began to tug at David, but the man didn’t think anything was wrong.

Image/Story Source Credit: Lisa Brockbank via GodVine

When David pointed out that Leala was drenching wet and barking at him, she began to bark even more erratically. The man followed the alarmed dog all the way to the nearest dam, not realizing his son was missing. David’s life was shattered when he first noticed his son’s lifeless body floating face down in the water. After an apparent drowning incident, Alexander wasn’t breathing and Leala had clearly attempted to help him on her own. The father and his pals did CPR on the boy during the next few minutes as a result of which he started breathing again.

Image/Story Source Credit: Lisa Brockbank via GodVine

Alexander was placed in a coma at the hospital for two days. His vital signs were stable, but he had suffered a significant brain damage. The doctors grew disappointed as hopes diminished and prepared the parents for the worst–that Alexander would die or be severely disabled. After 48 anxious hours in a comatose state, Alexander awoke. As Alexander’s treatment proceeded over the next few months, the medical professionals were astounded by the final outcomes–he not only survived but also fully recovered!

The doctors credit Alexander’s survival to the timely CPR, but David is certain it was all down to his loyal dog. The outcome would have been deadly if the vigilant angel hadn’t alerted him on time. Leala is a real-blue hero and we adore her!

Ruggles the tiny Shih-Tzu puppy was rescued from a puppy mill and then introduced to a new friend to signal a brand new beginning. His unlikely pal, Chompers the kitten, was found alone under a porch when she was only two days old. Watch as they meet each other for the first time in the video below.

Image/Story Source Credit: VS Positively

Despite their rough starts to life, both Ruggles and Chompers are happy and healthy and were adopted into loving forever homes. Ruggles went on to become an official ambassador for the shelter that rescued him, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. He visits schools to help educate kids on shelter dogs and puppy mills. How sweet!

A note from YouTube on their adoptions: “For those wondering why they were not adopted together… that was the shelter’s original plan, but Chompers (true to her name!) became too rough with little Ruggles, and due to his health problems, it was determined that it was in both of the animals’ best interest to be adopted separately. They are both happy and very much loved!”

When life throws us curveballs, sometimes all we need is a little love and support to get back on track. For Eric O’Grey, that support came in the form of a rescue dog named Peety. Their heartwarming story of mutual rescue is a testament to the power of love and the incredible bond between humans and animals.

Image/Source Credit: Mutual Rescue via YouTube Video

Eric was struggling with his health. At 51 years old, he weighed 340 pounds and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. His doctor warned him that if he didn’t make significant lifestyle changes, he wouldn’t live much longer. Feeling desperate and alone, Eric sought help from a nutritionist, who suggested he adopt a rescue dog to help him get active and lose weight.

That’s when Eric met Peety, a middle-aged, overweight dog who had been abandoned by his previous owners. The two instantly connected, and Eric knew that they were meant to be together. As they embarked on their journey to better health, Eric and Peety became inseparable. They went on daily walks, gradually increasing their distance and pace. Eric also switched to a plant-based diet, and both he and Peety began to shed the excess weight.

Over the course of a year, Eric lost an incredible 140 pounds, and Peety lost 25. But their transformation went beyond just the physical. Eric’s newfound confidence and happiness radiated from within, and he found himself making new friends and even falling in love. Peety, too, blossomed into a happy, loving dog who brought joy to everyone he met.

Sadly, in 2015, Peety passed away from cancer. But his legacy lives on in Eric’s continued commitment to health and wellness. Inspired by their journey together, Eric became a certified running coach and now helps others achieve their fitness goals. He also advocates for animal rescue and adoption, sharing his story to encourage others to open their hearts and homes to animals in need.

In 2016, Eric and Peety’s story was featured in a short film called “Eric & Peety” as part of the Mutual Rescue initiative. The film highlights the incredible bond between the two and the transformative power of love and companionship. It serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best medicine is the love of a furry friend.

So, if you’re feeling down or struggling with your own health journey, consider adopting a rescue pet. Not only will you be saving a life, but you might just find the support and motivation you need to turn your life around. After all, as Eric and Peety’s story shows, the love between a human and their pet can truly be a mutual rescue.

In the diverse world of canine companions, small dog breeds hold a special place in the hearts of many pet owners. Among these diminutive dogs, certain breeds are distinguished not just by their size but by their long, luxurious coats that demand admiration and a little extra grooming. These breeds combine the appeal of a lapdog with the elegance of a canine aristocrat, offering both beauty and companionship in a compact package. From silky strands that brush the floor to fluffy coats that beg to be cuddled, these small dogs with long coats are a testament to the variety and splendor of the canine kingdom. In this article, we will explore ten small dog breeds renowned for their long, luxurious coats, delving into the charm and characteristics that make each breed a beloved companion and a stunning sight to behold.

1. Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, affectionately known as the “Yorkie,” epitomizes the combination of a small size with a long, luxurious coat. This breed’s fine, silky hair is similar to human hair, growing continuously and capable of reaching the ground if not trimmed. Yorkies were originally bred in England to catch rats in textile mills, but their elegant appearance quickly made them a favorite among the Victorian upper class. Despite their dainty looks, Yorkies possess a spirited and brave personality. Their coat requires regular grooming to keep it in top condition, but many owners delight in styling their Yorkie’s hair, showcasing the breed’s natural elegance and charm.

2. Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu, with its noble origins in the royal courts of ancient China, is another small breed celebrated for its long, flowing coat. This dog’s luxurious hair covers its entire body, from the top of its head to the tips of its toes, and can come in a variety of colors and patterns. Shih Tzus are known for their friendly and outgoing personality, thriving on human companionship. Their coat demands daily grooming to prevent tangles and maintain its luster, but the effort is well worth it for the beauty and affection these dogs bring into their owners’ lives.

3. Maltese

The Maltese is a breed that has been cherished for over two millennia, known for its pure white, silky coat that drapes elegantly to the floor. These dogs are the epitome of grace and refinement, with a history that includes being the prized pets of royalty and nobility. Malteses are gentle and affectionate, making them excellent companions. Their hypoallergenic coat is a boon for allergy sufferers, though it requires regular grooming to keep it free of mats and tangles. The Maltese’s loving nature and stunning appearance have made it a timeless favorite among dog lovers.

4. Afghan Hound

Though not typically considered a small breed, the Afghan Hound’s unique characteristics and relatively smaller size compared to other long-coated breeds merit its inclusion. Known for its aristocratic bearing, the Afghan Hound boasts one of the most distinctive and luxurious coats in the canine world. This breed’s long, fine hair is reminiscent of silk, covering its body in elegant waves. Originally bred for hunting in the mountains of Afghanistan, their coat protected against harsh climates. Afghan Hounds are dignified and independent, yet also affectionate with their families. Their coat requires extensive grooming to maintain its beauty, making them a commitment, but one that many find incredibly rewarding.

5. Pekingese

The Pekingese, another breed with imperial Chinese roots, sports a long, luxurious coat that frames its lion-like face and stout body. This breed’s coat is thick and abundant, with a distinctive mane around the neck. Pekingese are confident and regal, often described as having a “big dog” personality in a small package. Their long hair needs regular grooming to prevent mats and keep it looking its best. Despite their somewhat aloof demeanor, Pekingese are devoted to their owners and make loyal, loving pets.

6. Lhasa Apso

Originating from Tibet, where they were bred as sentinel dogs in monasteries and nobles’ homes, Lhasa Apsos possess a long, flowing coat that serves as protection against the extreme cold. This breed’s hair is heavy and straight, often covering their eyes and reaching the floor. Lhasa Apsos are known for their keen intelligence, watchful nature, and independent spirit. Their coat requires a commitment to regular grooming, but their loyal companionship and distinctive appearance make them a cherished breed among those who appreciate their unique qualities.

7. Havanese

The Havanese, Cuba’s national dog, is adorned with a long, soft, and wavy coat that comes in a variety of colors. This breed’s cheerful and affectionate demeanor makes it a delightful companion. Havanese are adaptable and thrive in various living environments, from apartments to large homes with yards. Their coat is surprisingly easy to care for, requiring regular brushing to prevent tangles and keep it looking its best. The Havanese is also known for its playful and outgoing personality, always ready to make friends with humans and other dogs alike. Their sociable nature, combined with their stunning coat and small size, makes them an ideal pet for families, singles, and seniors seeking a loving and engaging companion.

Retired Nurse Opens A Hospice For Dying Senior Dogs Who Are Dumped Without Love https://imanimal.com/2024/03/23/retired-nurse-opens-a-hospice-for-dying-senior-dogs-who-are-dumped-without-love/ https://imanimal.com/2024/03/23/retired-nurse-opens-a-hospice-for-dying-senior-dogs-who-are-dumped-without-love/#respond Sat, 23 Mar 2024 18:33:02 +0000 https://imanimal.com/2024/03/23/retired-nurse-opens-a-hospice-for-dying-senior-dogs-who-are-dumped-without-love/

At 46, Nicole Coyle has dedicated her post-nursing career to providing a sanctuary for the most vulnerable dogs—those at the twilight of their lives or facing terminal illnesses. Disturbed by the frequent and heartless abandonment of these dogs, Nicole transformed her home into a haven for them, founding the “Grey Muzzle Canine Hospice Project.” This hospice is a beacon of hope for dogs deemed to have six months or less to live, a last resort for those on the brink of euthanasia.

Nicole’s commitment to these dogs goes beyond merely saving them from imminent death. She invests a significant portion of her savings to ensure that their final days are not only comfortable but filled with joy and love. Her hospice offers these dogs the luxuries they’ve likely never known: sumptuous meals like steak and ice-cream, and joyful excursions to the beach. Through her dedication, Nicole ensures that these dogs experience a sense of belonging and happiness, countering the neglect they faced.

The impact of Nicole’s work is profound. Under her care, many dogs have defied their grim prognoses, living beyond the six months they were given, testament to the healing power of love and comfort. However, Nicole’s mission is bittersweet, as she remains haunted by the knowledge that many senior and sick dogs still endure abandonment and die alone. She advocates for a change in mindset among pet owners, urging them to show compassion and responsibility towards their aging or ill pets rather than abandoning them in their time of greatest need.

Nicole’s “Grey Muzzle Canine Hospice Project” stands as a testament to her unwavering love and commitment to ensuring that no dog ends its life feeling unloved or unwanted. Through her actions, she not only provides a dignified end for these dogs but also challenges society to rethink how we care for our oldest and sickest pets. Her hope is that others will be inspired to show the same level of compassion and commitment, so that fewer dogs face their final days alone.
